Supporting People with Complex Behavioural Needs: Integrating Traumagenic Neurodevelopmental Information into Positive Behavior Support Plans
This one day interactive workshop presents information regarding trauma and its’ effects on the neurodevelopment of children into adulthood. The workshops have been presented throughout the United States and Canada, with presentations of the concepts in Amsterdam, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the recent BILD conference on Positive Behaviour Support Research and Best Practice held in Dublin, Ireland. Bob Bowen, the CEO of The Mandt System® and author and presenter of these workshops, was one of the keynote speakers at this conference.
Using case examples, Mr. Bowen will demonstrate how people use behaviour to cope with their traumatic experiences and how these coping mechanisms become the behavioural challenges demonstrated throughout the lifespan. This neurodevelopmental model was developed by Bruce Perry, MD, Ph.D., and is used with permission.
Working with and for people with complex behavioural needs requires that we learn to “follow instead of lead” in the dance of aggression. The presenter will guide small groups through the process of applying the concepts presented in the workshop to one individual served by small groups of attendees. This will empower attendees to integrate the concepts into Positive Behaviour Support plans through the use of structural and functional assessments. The training is consistent with the requirements of the all state regulations and best practice statements in Australia. The goal of The Mandt System® is to empower organizations to eliminate the use of restraint and seclusion in human service settings, while increasing the safety of all people within the organization.
The training is appropriate for all staff at all levels of organizations serving people affected by developmental disabilities, mental health disorders or related disabilities and who display behaviours that challenge themselves, other consumers, and/or staff. A background in psychology is not required! It is highly recommended that organizations send as many people as possible in order to work together in groups to transfer theory into practice.
At the end of the workshop participants will:
1. Demonstrate an awareness of the impact of trauma on human neurodevelopment
2. Describe the impact of trauma on the developing brain and neural networks
3. Demonstrate an awareness of the effect of stress on cognitive and affective behaviours
4. Apply the principles of trauma, neurodevelopmental processes, and PBS to specific cases

Comments from past workshops:
"Without having any knowledge of The Mandt System®, I was able to come into the training and not only learn new strategies but a new way to think about our individuals with complex behaviours. The learning was practical and immediately applicable."
Tamara Armitage, Wetaskiwin & District Association for Community Service Alberta, Canada
“Wow!!! Finally, a comprehensive and in-depth look at what treatment and support planning should REALLY be all about… There’s nothing else like this out there... I learned more in this training about the effects of trauma, with specific regard to the neurodevelopment of persons with developmental disabilities, than I learned in more than 9 years of college and graduate studies. ….everyone, everywhere that writes treatment/support plans for persons with a history of trauma must attend this training!”

I am pleased to tell you that I, in October last year, was in Stockholm at the 6th European Congress on violence in clinical psychiatry. I happend to hear your presentation: "The dance of aggression:Learning to follow instead of lead". At Stavanger University Hospital we have, since 1994, trained our staff in how to handle and treat aggression. Our aim is to offer our patients a safe milieu/environment without the threats you often will meet in a closed ward. Your presentation was a statement that showed that the staff will be able to calm down patients without restraint and techniques, and was most useful in the way we are trying to train our staff to help patient feel safe in our wards.
